POST UNIVERSITY: The Motley Theatre Design Course  

 

 

I have been working as a Set Designer for nearly two years now, both in and out of London where I am based. In that time I have worked on widely varying projects with regard to both budgets and venues. I have worked on Theatre, Film and TV projects, and have taken on a costume as well as set design role in many of them. I have also been involved in scenic painting and construction of my sets on several projects.

·         April-June 2008: Set design for 'The Comedy of Errors', a production for Guildford Shakespeare Company in the grounds of Guildford Castle (Open Air).

·         January-May 2008: Set design for 'Follies', a full-cast production of the musical by Steven Sondheim at the Secombe Theatre, Sutton (Prosc. Theatre, Capacity 400).

·         March-April 2008: Set design for 'Two's a Crowd', a new musical at the Rhoda McGaw Theatre, Woking (Prosc. Theatre, Capacity 200).

·         January 2008: Advert for Electrolux/ Teaser for Nickelodeon

·         September-November 2007:'Jack the Ripper- the Musical' set design for WLOS at Merton Hall (Capacity 120).

·         November 2007: 'Hatemail'- a short film for 2FC, Art Director. This film was recently chosen by the Arts Council to be screened at the Edinburgh Fringe Film Festival.

·         October 2007: 'Bare'- a TV teaser for a comedy series, Assistant Art Director.

·         September 2007: Music video for 'Spektrum' and Pulse Films, Art Director/ Food Specialist.

·         September 2007: 'The Sweethearts'- a short film for Pulse Films, Art Director.

·         May-August 2007: Designer of set and costumes for ‘Sweeney Todd’ for Kim Begley, Murray Hipkin and Millrace Productions. Full-cast professional production of the Sondheim musical at the Shawford Mill Theatre in Somerset (Capacity 120).

·         March-May 2007 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen’, ‘In the shadow of Ghandi’, ‘The Penal Colony’ and ‘Medea’- performed at Tara Arts Centre in April (Studio Theatre, Capacity 60).

·         January/ February 2007: Set, Costume and Publicity design for ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ at Wimbledon Studio Theatre (capacity 80) with Triggerfish Theatre Company. The play was staged in Period in Victorian times and set in many different locations throughout London.

 ·         October/November 2006: Designer for ‘La Musica’ at the Bookshop Theatre (Studio Theatre, Capacity 50) with the Godot Company. A Marguerite Duras play set in a French hotel lounge in the 1960s, running for 6 weeks.

 ·         August 2006: Designer for ‘Closer than Ever’ at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival- Ctoo (Studio Theatre, Capacity 150).

 ·         September 2005- August 2006: The Motley Theatre Design Course (1 yr). Developed modelmaking, design process  and technical drawing skills, in addition to learning about the history and cut of clothing, taking life drawing classes, learning about the role of a designer and working with directors.

 ·         Work Experience (paid and unpaid) as a Set Design Assistant in Autumn 2004, working on 'The Cunning Little Vixen'.

·         Evening course in Theatre Design at Central St Martins during Autumn 2004 / Theatre Design summer school at Wimbledon School of Art in August 2004.

 ·         Degree in Architecture completed from 2001-2004, gaining a 2:1. Skills learnt include design process, modelmaking, technical drawing by hand and CAD, presentation including use of Powerpoint and Photoshop software and 3D sketching.

 ·         University Drama Society: working on set design and construction, as well as lighting design and operation. Plays included 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Peter Pan', as well as 'All Day Breakfast with Geri and Tom'- an improvisational comedy show.

 ·         Architectural Assistant: September- December 2000 and asked back for Summer 2002. Working on completing a full set of technical drawings for a building on Vectorworks CAD package.

·         Set Design taken as an Individual Skill during Theatre Studies A-level. Two design projects completed, including modelbox and presentation- top grade gained.
